Day Five 2020

Sunday – the traditional day of rest. And Resting is the theme of today’s photo. It just so happened that this particular Sunday had been the day of taking down all the Christmas decorations, moving the furniture back round, and getting everything up the loft.

To celebrate a successful day, I cooked a Christmas Dinner Wellington with roasties. Went down a treat and we settled down late in the evening, Kerry with the blanket on which is like a red rag to a bull for Jeffrey.

It’s always difficult to pick up the texture of his fur when there’s not much light, but I think that the light given off by the TV, along with the back lighting, bring out just enough of the little man to set the restful scene.

Day Four 2020

Saturday mornings are all about Jeffrey, our 6 year old black pug. No doubt he will appear in a selection of photos for the year, but today’s theme is Weather.

A dull but dry start to the day, we were strolling along the Shoal Hill common – Jeffrey about 100 metres behind me going about his own routine. I noticed this cloud formation in the distance and took a couple of shots. I switched to HDR mode on the camera in the hope of capturing the dynamic range that I saw myself. Another benefit of the P30 Pro is the 5x optical zoom, which allowed me to capture the main element of the scene along with some of the taller trees of the landscape.

Day Three 2020

The first Friday of the year saw us spending an evening together with a few drinks at our local pub, followed by fish and chips. Delightful. Today’s theme is Close-Up.

I took shots of maybe 4 or 5 different subjects before settling on this one. It’s actually some detail from the pub walls. Simple testament to the eye catching detail that the guys at The Arcade in Cannock have introduced to the town in 2019, along with some fantastic beers and always delivering an atmosphere that is generated by some lovely locals.

I chose this shot as it combines a mixture of light and dark textures which have been faithfully reproduced by the camera on the Huawei P30 Pro in Macro mode.

Day Two 2020

An appropriately relaxing theme after day one is Bubbles. A guaranteed shot in our household every evening as the bath is poured.

The photo contains post-bath bubbles. There weren’t many left and the nature of the element against the white bath tub made it a challenging composition. I draped the shower hose to the back of the shot to add another texture to the scene, and adjusted the exposure, sharpness and colours to make it a little more dynamic. It ended up looking a little cold for such a relaxing theme.

Day One 2020

We celebrated the new year with family at the Plume Of Feathers Pub in Barlaston. A fantastic evening of conversation, laughter, dancing and some amazing food and drink.

I decided to set myself the challenge of taking a themed photo every day in 2020. Yes, I had been sampling the Thornbridge Jaipur (my personal favourite IPA) and was delightfully surprised to find the Creme Bearlee from Beartown Brewery was on tap too.

I’ve made the decision to take every photograph using my Huawei P30 Pro. An amazing phone with the best cameras I have had the pleasure to carry around with me all the time. I will also post process where I feel it will add to the photo, again using only the phone.

Throughout 2020 I hope to capture and create some great moments and memories. The hope is that this personal challenge will also make me think about and see things from another perspective. Needless to say, the theme for day one is Celebration.
